Japanese man arrested for abusing ferret

SAGAMIHARA, Japan April 21 (UPI) --

A Japanese man has been fined $4,212 for posting online a video clip of him abusing his pet ferret.

The unidentified Sagamihara man was prosecuted in Sagamihara Summary Court for posting the video of himself choking, hitting and generally abusing the ferret on an Internet message board, Mainichi Daily News reported Saturday.

More than a thousand people reported the man to police after he posted the video on the message board, prompting the Kanagawa prefectural police to arrest him.

He was indicted under the Protection and Control of Animals Law after a veterinarian was brought in to confirm that the cries coming from the ferret were cries of pain.

The defendant pleaded guilty and also revealed to investigators that he had abused more than 20 other pets to let off steam.

YOKOHAMA: A 30-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly abusing his pet ferret and posting on an Internet bulletin board footage of the animal being abused and apparently frightened.

Shinichi Moriyama, an employee of a major electric appliance maker, was quoted as telling the police that he did it "to relieve stress" from work and that he had killed "20 or 30 ferrets, hamsters and other animals from around November 2005."

Moriyama has allegedly added to his web postings of a ferret such comments as "I bit it in the leg in revenge" for being bitten on his finger, the police said.

An elderly couple who live on the Powys/Shropshire border were worried an intruder may have been in their home after strange noises started coming from their attic.Phyllis and Len Lewis, of Llangedwyn, became so concerned they even called in their daughter Linda to investigate the matter.

But when Linda’s partner climbed up into the attic at the pensioners’ home there was no burglar at large. It was a ferret.

The small animal, which had a dead rabbit by its side, then posed another problem for the family - how to catch it.

Linda rang villagers on Wednesday evening after the discovery to see if anyone knew of a ferret that had escaped and then rang the RSPCA helpline.

“I was amazed. When I asked if the RSPCA would come and catch it they refused.

“They said that on the grounds of health and safety reasons their inspectors could not go into attics to retrieve animals.

“Then I asked if they had a humane trap they could lend us but they said no, all they offered to do was to collect it and rehome it if we caught it.”

MARTIN Turner with three of the ferrets at the sanctuary.
A NETHER Alderley animal sanctuary boss is calling on owners to microchip their furry friends and find out more about how to care for them properly.

Martin Turner is often asked to find homes for the little critters found wandering through the Cheshire countryside.

He says many of the animals that come into his sanctuary on Bradford Lane are tame and were obviously once someone’s beloved pet.

Although he would love to reunite them with their owners, he says this is near impossible without the all important microchip and so he has to find new families for them.

He said: "We rehomed 20 last year but already we have had ten in this year, and it’s only February. We do eventually find homes for every one but people keep them as pets and really bond with them.

"Lots of people will be missing them but they don’t know where to look and don’t know we’ve got them. If they would only microchip them we could get them back to their owners safe and sound."

A member of the mustelids family, which includes weasels, otters and badgers, the ferret is a domesticated pole cat, originally bred for rabbiting.

Intelligent, playful and wiley, Martin says ferrets make great pets as they love to sleep, eat and play - in that order.

BUSINESSWOMEN were ferreting around for a fundraising idea - until they hit on a racing certainty!

Members of the Lancashire branch of The Lady Taverners helped raise cash for disabled children as three furry competitors were put to the test.

To cheers of encouragement, male ferret Hobs and females Kitty and Patch were passed down three six-foot long pieces of plastic tubing.

Kitty won the majority of the races at last night's event, held at the Three Fishes restaurant, Mitton, which raised around £2,000.

Among the guests were Sonia Kilby and her husband, Burnley FC chairman Barry, and Linda Hitman, co-owner of the Brockhall Village development.

Organiser Hilary Shepherd, who runs Maureen Cookson dress shop, George Street, Whalley, said: "We thought it would be good fun to have a Lancashire themed evening so we thought that we would have some clog dancing and .

"It is probably the most off-beat thing we have ever done. We try to do interesting and fun things and the great thing is the money stays in Lancashire."
