The BVA Animal Welfare Foundation (BVA AWF) has launched a new practical guide to caring for pet ferrets. The guide is produced in association with the Ferret Education & Research Trust (FERT). The BVA AWF says the move reflects the growing popularity of these intelligent and curious animals as household pets.

Covering the basics such as housing, feeding, health care and toilet training, the guide also offers advice on ferret-proofing your home and garden, and breeding and neutering as well as vaccination against Canine Distemper.

Carl Padgett, Chair, BVA AWF Trustees explained:

"While ferrets can sleep for a large period of the day, when they are awake they are very active and need a lot of stimulation to occupy their time. They live an average of eight to ten years so a high level of commitment and care is needed but our new guide should ensure that even the novice owner has all the information necessary to ensure their pet's health and welfare.

OAP animal ban after 100 'suffer'

Walford Rogers
Walford Rogers was already serving a ban on keeping animals

January 15, 2008

A pensioner found guilty of causing suffering to 105 animals has been given a six month suspended jail sentence.

Walford Rogers, who lives in a caravan on land at Cwmbran, Torfaen, was banned from keeping animals for 10 years.

The dogs and ferrets had been kept in poorly-built kennels and cages, Newport magistrates heard. But Rogers, 75, still denied any wrong-doing.

The RSPCA, which spent £100,000 rehousing the animals, said the case sent a clear signal to the public.

Rogers was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to 63 dogs and 42 ferrets at Cwmbran magistrates court on 30 November.

RESCUED ferrets in Flintshire are being taken for daily walks and living life at the end of a lead.

The furry friends from Capricorn Animal Rescue, Padeswood in Flintshire enjoy daily exercise to satisfy their active nature.

The latest addition to the four ferret family at the centre is young adult Harvey, who was rescued two weeks ago.

He was found starved and neglected but is now making a good recovery thanks to regular walks and lots of attention.

Two volunteers walk the ferrets for half an hour each day.

And, although the pets spend 14 to 18 hours a day sleeping, they are most active during dawn and dusk.

Capricorn secretary Sheila Stewart, who helps look after 32 different species of animals at the centre, said that ferrets are very curious and need to be kept occupied.

In close quarters, pet ferrets make fur a significant 'other'

WHEN she moved into her inner-city apartment, Jan Smith was in no doubt which type of pet would keep her company. Dogs and cats were a handful; goldfish and budgerigars lacked personality. Ferrets were the perfect choice.

The furry creatures sleep through most of the day, but are high on energy when their owners are willing to play, making them the ideal pet for people in small inner-city apartments.

For Ms Smith, now the secretary of the Victorian Ferret Society, it was an easy decision.

"They are very beautiful pets," she says. "Their antics are incredible. They play as soon as they wake up, and then they work themselves out and they drop and sleep for more than a few hours."

It's hard to know how many ferret owners there are in Australia, but numbers seem to be rising. Ferrets often get lumped in with "other" on surveys, although one American study found that ferrets were the third most popular "companion pet" behind cats and dogs.

The Canterbury Vet Clinic, one of Melbourne's leading ferret vets, says there has been a steady increase in the number of ferrets being presented for treatment. And the Ferret Society has had a surge of interest from people keen to adopt.

You can watch exclusive footage of the thieves as they make off with the rare breed of ferrets by clicking on the video link above.
The thieves, who attempted to disguise themselves with hooded sweatshirts, were filmed breaking into the heavily- protected garden through a fence before making off with five ferrets - two of which were a rare, black-eyed white breed.
Burglar alarms, barbed wire and CCTV (closed circuit television) did not deter them as they loaded the animals from cages into a stolen ferret carrying box.
