OTTAWA -- A disgruntled transit rider is fighting to have her pet ferret's bus pass reinstated.

Frances Woodard, 54, suffers from agoraphobia, anxiety and panic attacks that make it difficult for her to go out in public -- unless she's with her three-year-old albino ferret, Gyno (pronounced Gino).

But OC Transpo, Ottawa's public transit authority, took Gyno's pass away in April.

"He grounds me. It's like he senses I'm going into a panic, and the petting and stroking calms me down. It gives me something to focus on other than the panic," she said.

For Carlisle pet-owners, dogs have had their day. That’s according to Judith Nicholson, manager of Nu Pets in Lowther Street.

Since she started stocking ferrets a year ago, they have become her best-selling small pet.

She said: “People are buying them as a family pet, instead of cats or dogs. It used to be just for hunting.”

Ferret breeder Judith owns 20 of the creatures, selling 40 in the last two months.

She recently paid £250 for a studio photograph of her own favourite, a ferret called Mitch.

“They enjoy going for walks, they’ll play with chew toys and they’ll chase you,” she said.

“While you’re at work they can stay in a cage, then when you get home they can go for a bomb round the house.”

To tackle the distinctive ferret smell, she gives hers regular baths and douses them in deodorant. However, other traits are trickier to deal with.

Zookeeper rescues ferret from death by finding her a mate

DailyRecord.co.uk

A ZOOKEEPER has saved a frisky ferret's life - by finding her a date with a new male.

Edinburgh Zoo's Ross Poulter had to find a mate for his pet Two Socks due to a little known medical condition.

Female ferrets, known as jills, get ill and can die if they do not mate when they come into season.

Fellow zoo worker Kim Black mentioned she had a male, Gomez, at home. The furry twosome hit it off straight away after they were introduced yesterday.

Mr Poulter said: "Ferrets make great pets but if a jill is not mated she can develop aplastic anaemia and die.

"I want to breed from Two Socks but finding Gomez may also have saved her life."

In a sea of loyal labradors, pampered poodles and bashful bull mastiffs, Madura the ferret stood alone.

Donning a tiny multi-coloured striped beanie to shield his ears from the chilly wind, Madura braved the canine collective to do his bit for the third annual RSPCA Million Paws Walk at Morpeth Common yesterday.

And while Madura was clearly in the minority he still had a good time.

“I’ve actually wanted to bring Madura to this walk for the past couple of years but I haven’t been able to but this year we’ve made it and it’s been a wonderful morning,” Madura’s owner Parmila Ubeyratna, of Metford, said.

ARE YOU UP FERRET?

ARE YOU UP FERRET?

7 May 2008
Southwark News
By Richard Benson

If you have ever walked around Southwark Park, or any park for that matter, you will be more than familiar with seeing owners taking their pets for a walk, writes Richard Benson...

But, for the last four years residents of SE16 have been casting their eyes over some slightly less familiar pets at the end of one owner's lead.

When Dave Watson, of Abbeyfield Road, Bermondsey, goes for a stroll he can often be seen with his three ferrets and two polecats. Dave explains how people just want to stroke the pets.

Guinness, Tonic, Polo, Chocolate and Baby are not the individual names of the members of a warped Spice Girls tribute band, but the names of five loved pets that Dave and his wife Irene, who claims the naming rights, consider part of the family. When asked to pick a favourite Dave chose Tonic, simply because it's the oldest, so old in fact that Dave is certain it has outlived the life expectancy of a ferret, which stands at six-eight years. Baby is the youngest at six months old.
