A FORLORN ferret fancier is hoping the thieves who stole his pets will bring them back.

Sywell resident Stephen Johnson, age 57, has kept ferrets and polecats for the past 12 years.
He had 20 of the animals, but thieves who broke into his garden over the weekend snatched five from their cages.
Mr Johnson said he had no idea why the four polecats and single white ferret had been targeted by the animal snatchers.
He said: "I just can't understand it at all. They're not valuable to anyone, apart from us.
"I don't think anyone who was trying to sell them would get anything more than £1 for each of them."
Three of the polecats were black and white with a bit of tan, and the other was tan and white.
They were taken, along with a white ferret, from their hutches, which were not locked.
Police officers investigating the theft believe it happened sometime between 8pm on Saturday and lunchtime on Sunday.

Fun feast for ferret fanciers

YOU can't be wishy-washy about the ferret - you either love the little furry critter or you don't.

Perhaps a lack of admiration for this slinky cousin of the weasel wells from a base of ignorance.

Perhaps it comes from an assumption that the ferret is a rodent - it is not.

Either way, Sarah Parker, 9, of Nook, loves ferrets and was happy to share her passion as Latrobe's Bells Parade turned into ferret central on Australia Day.

Australia Day ambassador and walking rock encyclopedia Glenn A. Baker admitted he knew little about the ferret before his visit to the 96th Henley on the Mersey event.

The ferret found The ferret found

THERE'S nowt else to say ferret, this little lady is lost.

This bundle of fur was found wandering around a nearby village and has been taken in by the Locker family in Stainsacre.

Nicknamed Evie because she was found so close to Christmas she is currently staying in deluxe ferret accommodation.

Rachael Locker, who already has a male ferret called Derek, says she thinks Evie is around three months old.

She has already placed an advert in the Whitby Gazette asking for Evie's owner to come forward but with no luck – although Mrs Locker would rather like to keep her as she has already become one of the family.

Anyone who has had one of their ferrets weasel its way out of its cage should contact Mrs Locker on (01947) 825045.

Are Ireland's feral ferrets hiding in Fermanagh?

Fermanagh Herold

A survey has been launched to determine the distribution of feral ferrets in Ireland.

The ferret is a member of the weasel family and is the domestic form of the western polecat. It is very similar to the American mink in size and shape.

Two colour forms of the ferret occur in captivity. The first is albino, white with red eyes and the second form is variable but may be very similar to the wild polecat, dark brown outer hairs and creamy under fur on the body and a "bandit like" mask over the eyes.

Currently, the only free living populations known from Ireland are in North Co. Monaghan, near the Cavan border and on Rathlin Island off the North Antrim coast.

The population in Monaghan is thought to have become established in the 1980's from ferrets abandoned and lost by ferreters. Monaghan is very popular for ferreting due to the abundant rabbit population there.

The primary aim of the survey being conducted by Daniel Buckley, an ecologist from Co. Cork is to map the distribution of the known populations, to investigate if other feral populations occur in other locations on the mainland and offshore islands.

AN animal lover from Worcestershire is conducting a unique piece of research into how deaf ferrets respond to light.

Louise Clements was asked to come up with a specialist study as part of her HND in animal welfare and management at Pershore College.

"I really wanted to do something with ferrets because they are so fascinating and there is such little work done about them," said the 25-year-old, of Badsey, near Evesham.

"We have got two ferrets at the college - a deaf one and another that can hear, so I decided that I wanted to do something to compare the two if them."

Miss Clements contacted Droitwich Ferret Welfare, which has two deaf ferrets - Dozie Rosie and Haydon, which are helping with the study.

Miss Clements said she has adapted a system of clicker training' - where an animal is rewarded when it responds to a clicking sound.
