Curfew for Carlisle man who admitted leaving ferret to starve to death

A pet owner from Carlisle has been placed on curfew after he let his ferret starve to death.

Ian David Turner, of Hebden Avenue, Morton, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal at Carlisle magistrates court.

The court heard how RSPCA inspectors visited the 25-year-old’s previous address at Marina Crescent last September and found the dead ferret in a wooden hut at the back of the garden with no food or water. The floor was covered in wood shavings and soiled.

David Sharp, prosecuting on behalf of the RSPCA, told the court that a post mortem showed that the ferret had died from starvation.

He said that the animal had suffered and its body was emaciated, its spine was visible, and it had not had any food for at least 48 hours

Kevan Fitzmorris said the ferret settled after they gave it water

BBC News

A caged ferret dumped in a commercial wheelie bin in an East Sussex town has been rescued by a refuse crew.

The animal was discovered outside a row of shops in Crowborough moments before the bin's contents were emptied into a refuse vehicle and crushed.

The refuse crew from Wealden District Council said they investigated the bin because it was not closed properly.

The pet ferret, which has been named Wealden Will, was taken to Jarvis Brook Depot and adopted by a member of staff.

Kevan Fitzmorris, one of the refuse and recycling crew who found the ferret, said: "We felt something was not right with the bin which had not been properly closed.

"When we looked inside, we saw a ferret next to the small cage which it had been left in. It was

Ferret tags will keep you together

The RSPCA in the West Midlands is urging ferret owners to get their pets microchipped after finding an increased number of straying ferrets are being picked up throughout the region.

In the past week Animal Collection Officer (ACO) Suzie Smith has had five separate calls about ferrets on the loose.

“In the eight years I have worked for the RSPCA I have only ever picked up one microchipped ferret,” she said.

“Ferrets are renowned for being energetic, curious with a love of playing hide and seek so anyone who owns a ferret should ensure their pet is chipped for piece of mind.

“We have a real problem with straying ferrets at the moment which could be partly to do with the breeding season.

"We are receiving calls about straying ferrets every week and when they are not chipped we have no way of reunited missing pet and owner."

It didn't attract the same level of interest as last month's 2020 Summit, but the weekend's inaugural Ferret Health Symposium, held by the Australian branch of the International Ferret Congress (no, I'm not making that up), had arguably more defined goals — and a raffle.

Ferrets, much maligned as bitey and smelly, are increasingly popular domestic pets in Australia. In the US, ferrets are the third most popular pet, despite being illegal in several states.

The two-day symposium, which attracted ferret lovers from around the country and veterinary specialists from as far afield as Canada and the US, featured presentations on the health requirements, care and behaviour of domestic

RESCUER Don Holtum, Stroud Green Library manager, with ferret Cano

THIS fidgety fur-ball enjoyed some ferreting of his own after spending hours wandering the streets of Stroud Green.

But the roving pet buried himself in some good books after he was rescued by staff at Stroud Green Library in Quernmore Road, following an eight-hour jaunt last Thursday.

Library manager Don Holtum said: "He was just running down the street at about 10am sniffing the cars and the trees, just like a ferret on a day out.

"I went and picked him up and got him sitting in the book crates in the library. It was quite dangerous, he could easily have got run over. I don't get to do too much ferret handling in my line of work but I've grown quite attached to him now."

But the ferret, whose name is Cano, was eventually claimed by his owners from a nearby newsagent after Mr Holtum launched an appeal.

His owner, who did not want to be named, revealed Cano had escaped from his cage at about 2am.
