Lancing girl wins for ferret-handling skills

A 10-year-old Lancing girl has won awards for her ferret-handling skills at two national shows, only months after starting to take part in competitions.
Keeley Nagle, a pupil at Seaside Primary School, won in the disabled category with her pet, Rocket Dog, during her second competition.

She was then crowned best child handler at her third.

"She absolutely loves her ferrets," said Keeley's mum, Trisha Byford.

"She shares the looking-after of them with me, so she knows as much as I do about them.<

Parenting: the Idle Parent on keeping ferrets

Bunnies beware: Twister and Whisper are no dummies when it comes to burrows.

Could I recommend ferrets? The parent who aspires to idleness will often make the basic error of thinking that more animals in the house means more work. This might be true for the first week or two following the arrival of the animal in the home, but the family will soon grow accustomed to the small amount of feeding and looking after that pets need. And the bonus is that if you choose the right animal, the kids will do it all for you. This has certainly been the case with our new ferrets, Twister and Whisper.

The first point to make is that ferrets are nothing like as smelly and bitey as their reputation suggests. It is true that a light odour lingers on the hands after handling them but this is easily despatched with water. As for the biting, they will tend to nip you if you stick a finger in their

Time for Ferret Owners to Stand up & be Counted!

LONDON, July 5 2009/PRNewswire/ --

- 1st National Ferret Census

Despite popular myth, not all ferret-owners wear cloth caps, or keep their ferrets down their trousers! Anecdotal evidence and sales of ferret food suggest that there are millions of ferrets in the UK - but until now there has been no reliable data about the ferret population or lifestyle.

The Ferret Education and Research Trust (FERT) and pet food firm James Wellbeloved are undertaking the first ever British ferret census, with a view to establishing not only UK ferret numbers but also whether they are kept as pets or working animals and their living conditions - housing, diet, veterinary treatment - geographical concentration, rescued or rehomed or not, and how long owners have kept ferrets.

Ian Kearns from FERT says: "Ferrets are fantastic little creatures, very clever and lively, and they make clean, loving pets - as well as

Curfew for Carlisle man who admitted leaving ferret to starve to death

A pet owner from Carlisle has been placed on curfew after he let his ferret starve to death.

Ian David Turner, of Hebden Avenue, Morton, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal at Carlisle magistrates court.

The court heard how RSPCA inspectors visited the 25-year-old’s previous address at Marina Crescent last September and found the dead ferret in a wooden hut at the back of the garden with no food or water. The floor was covered in wood shavings and soiled.

David Sharp, prosecuting on behalf of the RSPCA, told the court that a post mortem showed that the ferret had died from starvation.

He said that the animal had suffered and its body was emaciated, its spine was visible, and it had not had any food for at least 48 hours

  Wealden Will and Kevan Fitzmorris
Kevan Fitzmorris said the ferret settled after they gave it water

BBC News

A caged ferret dumped in a commercial wheelie bin in an East Sussex town has been rescued by a refuse crew.

The animal was discovered outside a row of shops in Crowborough moments before the bin's contents were emptied into a refuse vehicle and crushed.

The refuse crew from Wealden District Council said they investigated the bin because it was not closed properly.

The pet ferret, which has been named Wealden Will, was taken to Jarvis Brook Depot and adopted by a member of staff.

Kevan Fitzmorris, one of the refuse and recycling crew who found the ferret, said: "We felt something was not right with the bin which had not been properly closed.

"When we looked inside, we saw a ferret next to the small cage which it had been left in. It was
