Pet lovers bitten by the ferret bug |

Razor-sharp teeth and a skunk-like smell make
ferrets not, perhaps, the most obvious of pets, but record numbers
of animal lovers are falling for their charms, writes Jasper
Copping.

Ferrets are extremely playful and inquisitive
animals
|
The population of pet ferrets is estimated
to have grown to two million from 100,000 in 10 years. Fans
say ferrets make ideal pets because they adapt to people's
busy lifestyles and are easily house-trained.
They sleep for much of the day and can be left
for long periods while their owners are at work, but are extremely
playful and inquisitive once they wake.
Ferrets, which belong to the same family as the skunk and polecat,
can emit pungent odours, but new dry foods with deodorisers minimise
this, as does neutering males. Ian Kearns, from the Ferret Trust, said the
animal's image had suffered from the oft-repeated clip of Richard
Whiteley, the late host of the television programme Countdown,
being bitten by one in 1977. "If they are correctly handled
and in the right environment, they have no need to bite," Mr
Kearns said. "However, they do have a fascination with taking
things, such as a bunch of keys or the odd sock." Recommend this article... |

The BVA Animal Welfare Foundation
(BVA AWF) has launched
a new practical guide to caring for pet ferrets. The guide is
produced in association with the Ferret Education & Research
Trust (FERT). The BVA
AWF says the move reflects the growing popularity of these intelligent
and curious animals as household pets.
Covering the basics such as housing, feeding, health care and toilet training,
the guide also offers advice on ferret-proofing your home and garden,
and breeding and neutering as well as vaccination against Canine Distemper.
Carl Padgett, Chair, BVA AWF Trustees explained:
"While ferrets can sleep for a large period of the day, when they are
awake they are very active and need a lot of stimulation to occupy their time.
They live an average of eight to ten years so a high level of commitment and
care is needed but our new guide should ensure that even the novice owner has
all the information necessary to ensure their pet's health and welfare.

OAP animal ban after 100 'suffer' |
Walford Rogers was already serving a ban on keeping animals
|
BBC News
January 15, 2008
A pensioner found guilty of causing suffering to 105 animals has been given a six month suspended jail sentence.
Walford Rogers, who lives in a caravan on land at Cwmbran, Torfaen, was banned
from keeping animals for 10 years.
The dogs and ferrets had been kept in poorly-built kennels and cages, Newport
magistrates heard. But Rogers, 75, still denied any wrong-doing.
The RSPCA, which spent £100,000 rehousing the animals, said the case sent a clear
signal to the public.
Rogers was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to 63 dogs and 42 ferrets
at Cwmbran magistrates court on 30 November.

Ferrets lovers lead the way in Flintshire |

| Harvey the ferret |
RESCUED ferrets in
Flintshire are being taken for daily walks and living life at the end
of a lead.
The furry friends from Capricorn
Animal Rescue, Padeswood in Flintshire enjoy daily exercise to satisfy
their active nature.
The latest addition to the four ferret family at the centre is young
adult Harvey, who was rescued two weeks ago.
He was found starved and neglected but is now making a good recovery
thanks to regular walks and lots of attention.
Two volunteers walk the ferrets for half an hour each day.
And, although the pets spend 14 to 18 hours a day sleeping, they are
most active during dawn and dusk.
Capricorn secretary Sheila Stewart, who helps look after 32 different
species of animals at the centre, said that ferrets are very curious
and need to be kept occupied.
