It's been the Ferret Olympics for nine years, but now an annual competition
in Eugene, Oregon is changing its name.
The United States Olympic Committee has threatened to sue -- prompting event
organizers to make it the Ferret Agility Trials. This year's event was scheduled
for Sunday. An estimated 75 ferrets competed for medals in events like the tube
run and paper bag escape.
Organizers says the event -- originally a fundraiser for an animal shelter
-- didn't attract much attention until her local newspaper reported on it last
year. The story was on national T-V before the Colorado Springs-based U-S-O-C
took action.
Committee officials say the legal department asks an average of about 50 groups
a year to stop using the name Olympics.
