ITHACA - A Freeville teen is facing a felony
charge in connection with the death of a ferret.
Troopers have charged Christopher K. Underwood,
17, with aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class E felony, state police
officials said. Underwood is a William George Agency resident and
student at the Union Free School located on the agency's campus,
they added.
The case dates back to last autumn, when Underwood allegedly choked a ferret and class pet named Buddy, the officials said. The ferret
died soon after, which led to an investigation
and Underwood's arrest on April 1, they added.
Underwood pleaded not guilty at his arraignment
in Tompkins County Court on Wednesday, and his attorney Mari Townsend
told the court she would be seeking youthful offender status for
him.
According to testimony Wednesday, Underwood
remains a resident in good standing at the William George Agency,
which is located in Freeville.
