Joan Jett among those at Ollie the ferret's homecoming | BY DAVE MARCUS March 9, 2009 Newsday Ollie the ferret - who attracted nationwide attention after escaping from a petsitter's Long Beach apartment - came home to a boisterous welcome-back crowd that included singer Joan Jett. At the party in Long Beach Saturday night, Jett and other friends joined Rosemarie Maracich and Shay MacInnis, both of Fairfield, Conn., in celebrating their successful campaign to get the ferret back after he was lost and then adopted out to a new owner by the Freeport Animal Shelter. Jett took a break from working on the film "The Runaways," a biopic of her first major band, the '70s all-girl punk rock group by that name. Other guests included model and actress Nicole Herold, who recently had a small role in the movie "Marley & Me"; Jon Keyser, a model who has appeared in |
GQ magazine; and Glen Cove events planner Michael Russo, who recently arranged celebrity weddings for former Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca, former 'N Sync band member Joey Fatone and others. Ollie isn't really that well-connected, but Maracich is in the music industry, and last week her friends around the country inundated the Freeport shelter with e-mails and petitions demanding that the ferret be returned to its original owners. "Everybody jumped on this right away," said another Friend of Ollie, Glen Cove public relations agent Richard Piana. "With the e-mails and Facebook, people can get their point across without hesitating." The party broke out just hours after a volunteer from the shelter returned Ollie. The ferret himself, who has a face with a raccoon mask, was blase about the attention. After cuddling with a few people in a quiet back room, Ollie burrowed under a towel in his cage and fell asleep.
