Ferreting Out Some Facts
Dear Readers: What fascinating little creatures FERRETS are (we had four of them years ago), and they can make wonderful pets, but they do have unique personalities and behaviors. So, if you're considering having a ferret join your household, a little research is in order.
Ferrets love to play! And if you're going to have one, you might as well have two. They will keep each other busy, and you'll have hours of entertainment watching them.

PICAYUNE —Every year we hear of more and more animal attacks. This very morning a report on CNN told of an iguana attack in Chicago. Iguanas in Chicago?
Several summer’s ago, it was if the sharks were having a feeding frenzy on human beach lovers with each bite reported by every news media outlet causing us all to return to the anxiety of the summer of Jaws.
Back in the late 70’s, I felt a tinge of fear for several summers after seeing the great shark movie. It affected people deeply, causing some to be afraid of getting in their own bath tubs. Ironically, your bathtub is more dangerous than the beach.
The now classic flick came on television a couple of weeks ago and I just had to start watching it because it is one of those kind of movies and before I realized it, the twins were also watching, captivated by the story of the shark against man. It was edited for television, so I allowed them to continue watching. After all, they watch nature shows with about as much violence. Recommend this article... |

Jim Lombardi and his wife, Coleen, have been together for 21 years. In the beginning, in addition to being attracted to one another, their pets had an affinity for each other.

Jessica Peretti of Joliet holds her ferrets Kaga, Jaku and Nagi. Ferrets are easy to litterbox train and love human companionship, but they also have to have attention every day, says Peretti.

Lombardi has owned King Neptune's Pet World in Shorewood for 27 years. When he first met Coleen, he sold her a marshal ferret.
"I sold her a female and I had a male and we put them together," Lombardi said. "The female was acting a little funny for a while."
And, soon, the female had 11 babies.
Lombardi bred ferrets for some time, but when his first ferret died, he stopped. But he still has a special place in his heart for the animals. "They're a neat, small animal -- it's like half raccoon, half cat, half mink," he said.
'Attention every day'
Ferrets are easy to litterbox train and love human companionship. That love of human companionship, though, can be a drawback for some owners.
"They have to have attention every day," said Jessica Peretti, a Joliet ferret owner.

Roanoke, VA - Freckles, the Foutzes' fearless ferret.
Try repeating that quickly a few times.
Freckles, a 9-month-old male ferret belonging to the Foutz family of Cotton Hill, is a tongue twister and much more.
On May 21, Freckles spent 35 minutes in the Foutzes' washing machine and lived to have somebody else tell his story.
Andrea Foutz, the mother of two and wife of former Cave Spring High School football coach Ben Foutz, doesn't know when she'll be able to do laundry again.
On the morning in question, she had put one load of dark-colored laundry into the washing machine before heading to her children's bedrooms in search of any stray garments.
Freckles did not have a history with the washing machine, but he was known to wander. Recommend this article... |

ODESSA - Trixie the ferret romps around with enough energy for a whole pack of ferrets. But it's the 4-year-old's love of digging that moved her owner, Ellie Willingham, to write a book based on Trixie's exploits.
The book, Wildwood, takes place in an old Western mining town where ferrets work the mine and wage war with coyote-riding raccoons. But the strangeness doesn't stop there. In Wildwood, dogs run the local police station, a couple of cats run the Wildwood Inn, and the guinea pigs run the bank.
"Ringo is the main character and he's based on Trixie, " said Ellie, who wrote and illustrated the book when she was 16.
The Odessa teen found a publisher for the book about a year later and now is ready to submit a second manuscript.
"I was surprised, " said Ellie, now 18. "I didn't expect it to get published so quickly." Recommend this article... |
