Mother: Ferret, not pit bull, gnawed off baby's toes

KATC-3

BENTON, La. -- The parents of a month-old girl whose toes were gnawed off while her parents slept apparently disagree about whether the culprit was their ferret or their 6-week-old pit bull.

Mary Hansche, 22, told KTBS-TV on Tuesday that she thinks it was the ferret. "The way the bite marks were on her foot. The ferret being out of its cage. I knew it wasn't the dog," she said.

But her husband, Christopher Wayne Hansche, 26, told Bossier City police that the ferret had been in its cage all night, city spokesman Mark Natale said Wednesday.

"We were told that the puppy had blood on its fur. But when the officers arrived there, the animal did not have blood on its mouth," he said.

Regardless of the culprit,

He said which animal did it won't affect charges against the Hansches, who booked were Dec. 10 on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence and remained jailed Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bond each.

"We know this child was injured by an animal while in the custody of the parents," who should have prevented the injury, Natale said.

Their daughter has been released from the hospital and is in state custody.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS - While most vets would have put a paralyzed ferret to sleep, new owner Bill Higbee gives Scooter the royal treatment.
Higbee built Scooter his own wheelchair to help him get around. November 1, 2006.

When the local vet told Higbee about the ferret, he says he knew he had to adopt him.

Scooter's back legs are paralyzed, so Higbee built him a wheelchair "so his little legs can hang off the side and get stronger and things."

"We ran the aisles of Ace Hardware with this scooter," said Higbee.

That is not the only treatment Scooter gets. He also gets acupuncture once a week and regular shots of B-12.

Higbee is known around Steamboat as the man who takes in pets no one else wants.

Ferret can make companionable pet

The Couier Press
August 27th, 2006

Dear Dr. Wise: After I retired, we moved to a no-pets-allowed condo and had to give away our dog. Our children felt sorry for us and gave us a little female ferret. We know nothing about taking care of a ferret. Can you help us?

Ferrets are delightful pets. They have become popular as more people discover how playful and affectionate they are and how easily busy owners can care for them. They are less demanding and require less care than cats and dogs.

You will find that caring for a ferret is very much like dealing with a dog or cat. Ferrets can be trained to use a litter box. You can teach them to come when you call their name, whistle or cluck your tongue.

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Australian television production company Radio Pictures has chosen the Columbus's 8th Annual Ferret Buckeye Bash as the top US ferret show for filming of their PBS documentary entitled "Standards of Perfection." Producer Mark Lewis has produced two other shows, (cats and cattle) in this series that aired in April 2006 on PBS. The documentary will include not only the show but interviews of many ferret lovers as well.

"This will be first time a ferret show has been filmed for documentary and promises to give some real insight to the wonderful wacky world of ferret owners, breeders, shelters and all ferret lovers," says Show Coordinator, Scarlett Gray-Saling. Now in it's eighth year, Ferret Buckeye Bash is the largest ferret show of its kind. Exhibitors will be coming from Ohio, surrounding states and as far as Washington State, Florida and New Jersey. "We again have taken on an international flavor with three of our twelve judges flying in from Nagoya, Japan," said Ms. Gray-Saling. The Ferret Buckeye Bash is a premier championship ferret show where ferrets are judged similar to cats and dogs. Along with the championship judging, there will be more than 40 vendors specializing in ferret related items of which many are not found in pet stores. In addition, there will be numerous ferret rescues and breeders there to help educate ferret owners and offer ferrets for adoption.

Maggie, a seafaring ferret belonging to Tom and Amy Gillespie, makes her nightly rounds through the food stores on Dream Catcher.
As this anthropomorphized pet so eloquently demonstrates, cruising blogs aren't just for humans anymore.

For the past two years, Tom and Amy Gillespie have been living and cruising aboard their 36-foot catamaran, Dream Catcher. Among the many entertaining features of the couple's website is a section written by Tom in the voice of their pet ferret, Maggie. Here's the latest from "Ferret's Corner":

"My days onboard consist mostly of sleeping in late, then having breakfast in bed. Around 2:00 p.m. or so I will get out and play for a little bit. Play time usually leaves me exhausted, so I go back to bed until dinner time. After eating dinner two or three times, I like to go for an evening stroll through the boat looking for something to attack. Tom's miscellaneous computer parts are usually good for a laugh or two, but sometimes I make due with a random sock.
