Donna over the moon at ferret care trophy | Friday, March 27, 2009 Herald Express A KINGSTEIGNTON woman has ferreted out an unusual animal welfare trophy. Donna Matthews has been awarded the country's top prize for ferret welfare after taking in lost and abandoned ferrets. Donna was given the coveted prize at the annual meeting of the National Ferret Welfare Society. Donna said: "I was over the moon when I got it. It was totally unexpected. "This is the first time the award has come to this part of the country. The closest it had been before now was Dorset." |
Donna has about 20 to 30 ferrets in her care at any one time and pays for everything out of her own pocket. She said: "People who have lost ferrets give me a call and often I have them. "If lost ferrets are brought into the local vets they give them to me to look after." Donna has loved the wriggly creatures since she was a child. She said: "They are pretty, inquisitive and clean. They are not bitey at all. "They all have their own personality." Donna re-homes many of the ferrets which end up in her care. Families wanting to take on ferrets are subject to home checks to make sure the animal is suitable. If Donna has a working ferret she tries to place it in a home which wants the animal for rabbitting. "It is not fair for a ferret which is used to being very active to have an indoor life," she said. Donna shows ferrets and has had some success with that. She is also the local area coordinator for the National Ferret Welfare Society. Anyone who has lost a ferret or has found one which needs looking after can contact Donna on 07811 761852. Recommend this article... |
