PHILLIPSBURG | Debra Sadowski is digging in her heels to protect her ferret rescue from the town zoning board.

"There is no way they're getting me to get rid of the ferrets," Sadowski said.

Sadowski and her husband Keith have run Fuzzy Loving Ferrets Rescue since 1998--first in Washington, then Independence Township and now out of an Irwin Street home in Phillipsburg.

Make room for 44 ferrets, seven cats, two hamsters, nine doves and more

From the outside, the modest brick house looks like the other homes in the Scenic Heights neighborhood of northeast Pensacola.

But this house is home to Wes and Susan Lee Hurley, 44 ferrets, seven cats, a dog, two hamsters, nine doves and a "neurotic" pigeon.

It's the Ferret and Dove Sanctuary, a "no-kill" facility, which cares for ill or abandoned ferrets and other animals.

The sanctuary got its start eight years ago when Wes Hurley took in a mistreated ferret. Word got around, and he soon was taking in more.

Ferret shelter closing leaves animals homeless
Jan 18, 2006
KVBC - Las Vegas

Ferrets are the third most popular pets in the Las Vegas Valley and their numbers are increasing. But some owners are finding them difficult to keep, and the only ferret shelter in town is closing.

The older ferrets get, the more attention and special care they need, which is when a lot of owners choose to get rid of them. Until now, most of those unwanted ferrets ended up in the only ferret shelter in Las Vegas.

"For the first year we rescued 250 ferrets and after that it's been 375 to 400 a year," said CJ Jones, owner of 24 Carat Ferret.

More than just another cute face
Friday, October 21, 2005

The Roanoke Times

Star City Ferret Club members coordinate rescue efforts for dozens of abused or neglected ferrets.

One ferret bounces across the floor like a Slinky. Another waddles behind on stumpy legs. A couple more pitter-patter through a segment of black PVC tubing while several more sleep piled together in a hammock, five to six in a group, their bodies folded over and under each other like spaghetti in a bowl.

For many ferret enthusiasts, having one of these spunky creatures is not enough. And members of Roanoke's Star City Ferret Club are no exception.
