Home foreclosures and a tough economy and adding to the number of smalls pet relinquished.

There’s no doubt, 2008 has been a tough economic year. Rising food costs, high gas prices and home foreclosures have put a dent in the lives of Americans who are keeping a tight watch on their pocketbooks. From what many small animal rescue organizations have seen, people who are becoming financially displaced from their homes are facing a crisis as to what to do with their small pets.

“In the last eight months we have seen an increasing number of people who are showing up at shelters, who are calling at the very last day when they are having to leave their home and they are just bringing their animals to the shelter,” said Heather Bechtel, director of Rabbit Haven and Cavy House in Santa Cruz, California. “It’s between their ability to get a roof over their heads and have animal companions.”

This 130-acre Maryland farm is home to Rocky's Ferret Rescue And Shelter.

In June, about 100 ferret enthusiasts from across the United States arrived at Rocky’s Ferret Rescue And Shelter in Maryland to celebrate Ferretstock 2008. This annual fundraising event for the shelter takes place at the 130-acre farm and can last for a weekend. It began in 1998 as a simple social gathering.

Barb Clay, director of shelter affairs, said it was exciting to greet guests one by one, see old friends and meet new ones. “We were honored to have representation from the president of Ferrets Anonymous and CDFEA, April from Totally Ferret, and about 12 shelter operators.”

An animal sanctuary in Willington, County Durham is under threat of closure! This would mean the loss of 45 acres of land and the destruction of the animals looked after at the sanctuary by Paula Campbell. She needs to raise £25,000 in just less than 2 weeks or she will be evicted and the sanctuary and animals lost.
A benefit is being held at the Angel Inn pub on Tuesday (22nd July) by local band Diablo 66 in an attempt to raise some of the money needed to save this sanctuary.

It's a lot of money to raise in a short amount of time, but IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE!! As one member of the band said to me last night "If everyone just does something, tries their best then we'll be able to save it". The same goes for almost anything.

Why we chose a furry different pet

June 17, 2008

NOT everyone fancies a cat or a dog as a pet.

More and more households are turning to exotic animals to satisfy their desire for creature companionship.

From snakes and spiders to ferrets and lizards, these creatures are attracting legions of fans.

* Ferrets

ROSE MORRIS'S first ferret had the diet of a king, or a boxer, take your pick.

Steak and eggs it was for the aptly named Tyson (after the prizefighter pugilist who famously bit off an opponent's ear) even though this high-protein combination is about as far removed as possible from correct ferret food.

Two decades ago ferret keeping, purely as a pet, was in its infancy.
