Ferret it out |
By Ellie Behling
The Columbus Dispatch
August 23rd, 2007
Every Christmas when I was little, my parents would explain that Santa wasn't bringing a dog or a cat because Dad had allergies. Watching my betta fish get angry at his own reflection didn't cut it, so one fateful holiday when I was 11, we came to be a ferret family.
Yes, I said ferret—the weasel-like creatures best known for appearances in Kindergarten Cop and Along Came Polly (in both heroic and handicapped roles, respectively), and for being outlawed in California. Yes, they sometimes bite—I have a scar on my nose to prove it, but note that I also have a scar from a cat.
Yes, they look like rats—but the carnivores are unrelated to rodents. Recommend this article... |

Wed 15 Aug 2007 IT'S not unusual for staff at the Lothians' biggest animal rescue centre to be rushed off their feet.
But while the centre is normally overrun by the huge number of abandoned and mistreated pets coming in, the last fortnight has seen staff struggling to cope with dozens of animals going out.
More than 70 of the centre's dogs, cats, rabbits and even snakes have found new homes after staff made an urgent appeal through the Evening News. Recommend this article... |

Humans aren’t the only ones feeling the crunch of Calgary’s housing market.
Molly Jo, Desmond, and Shelby are just three ferrets that have been left behind in empty rental units by owners who chose not to bring them along when they moved.
Since June, seven of the furry weasels have been turned in to the Ferret Rescue and Education Society (FRES) by landlords or someone else who found them, and four have been surrendered by the owners themselves when they moved, said education director Sheila Garland. Recommend this article... |

Consider adding a rescued ferret to your own family.
By Jennifer Hayes: Best Friends Network
Things are looking up for Sally Jo, since she was found last month with a companion on the side of the road. They were taken to Town Lake Animal Center, who contacted Connie Gaddy of Ferret Waystation, the only ferret rescue organization in the Austin area. Unfortunately, Sally Jo’s friend was too ill to treat, but Sally Jo came through. Despite her advanced seven years of age, adrenal disease, and grief over the loss of her companion, she persevered and actually flourished under Gaddy’s care. So much so, that Sally Jo caught the eye of an adopter and will be heading to her new home next week.Though popular pets, ferrets are often overlooked in the rescue community and according to Gaddy, there are many misconceptions about the animals themselves, including:
Ferrets spray like a skunk – Most ferrets have their anal glands removed at the breeder. Those that have not been de-scented, expel a smelly odor, not a liquid, much like passing gas which dissipates quickly.

Potential ferret owners be warned: They aren't for everyone. The animals are exotic, high-maintenance pets. |

Step into Angela and Valerie Smith's Atlanta living room, and 54 sensitive snouts know someone new has arrived. Tiny faces with beady eyes and rounded ears peer through wire caging or over the edge of miniature hammocks. The cages sit in vertical stacks, like condos. They rise about 7 feet, and cover three walls. Only a love of ferrets could explain this. Or a desire to help the mischievous, quick-footed creatures when their owners don't love them enough. The Smiths, who founded a nonprofit ferret rescue six years ago, take in the small animals regardless of age, temperament or health. Each has a sad story. Recommend this article... |
