SAN JOSE, Calif., March 31 (UPI) -- A Field Research poll funded by Ferrets Anonymous has found that most California respondents favor keeping ownership of the pointy-nosed animals illegal.
The San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported that the survey of 754 California residents was taken between March 21 and 28, and that less people support the legalization of ferrets than making same-sex marriage legal.
"Only 38 percent favor legalization. That's kind of absurd," Ferrets Anonymous founder Pat Wright said. "I thought California was more of a live-and-let-live state. If we had proposed legalized gay marriage or marijuana, we would've gotten a higher number."
The disappointing news from the group's survey comes in the wake of a failed attempt last year to legalize ownership of the polecat descendants in a California legislative committee.
The newspaper said that ferret-legalization lobbyist Jeanne Carley has criticized Wright's efforts such as the survey, alleging he is simply hurting their cause.
"One thing Pat got right in his latest missive is that the bad news on the Field Poll does hurt our chances for a new bill," she said, "not as catastrophic as a failed initiative but still this will most likely have some negative ramifications. And this is sad."
