OGDEN -- The city may stop enforcing its ban on pet ferrets while its administration examines other areas of Ogden's animal code.

"There are parts of that policy that haven't been reviewed for many, many years," said Mark Johnson, Ogden's chief administrative officer.

Meet my legal animals. They live in Canada, the land of outdated animal-cruelty laws and strong beer. My animals are called ferrets, and they have been domesticated for so long that no one knows for sure where they came from. Some say they are descended from the European polecat. Others say Asia.

People who love their pets should not be made to suffer because of the ignorance of lawmakers.

Ferrets are not wild animals. They've been bred and raised in captivity for centuries. They even have a whole magazine devoted to their care as pets.

OGDEN -- City officials expect to review and possibly change a law banning ferrets in Ogden.

"It seems like the law is really outdated," Councilwoman Amy Wicks said. "I think it's time to give it another look."
