Political Notes — Ferrets have their own bill
Published on March 24, 2006

You read that right. Legislation specifically designed to protect ferrets -- mustela putorius furo. Sounds a little hokey for the 188-member Maryland General Assembly to be tackling, doesn't it?

Well, controversial bills come in all forms, and this one has been around since 2002.

Over the last week, it's caused some snickers among the more cynical members of the State House press corps (that's all of us), and among some legislators who believe state government should be finding better things to do with its time.

New Ogden Law Limits Number of Pets

You can still love dogs in Ogden, you just can't own more than two of them. A new city animal ordinance restricts the number of pets you can own and some people aren't happy with the new laws.

It's a law that was passed with some controversy this week. Now you can't have more than six animals in your house, which means dogs, cats, or ferrets. In fact, you can't have more than two dogs or two ferrets, the new animal that's now legal in Ogden.

Ferret smugglers beware. If House Bill 1292 passes, they could have difficulty weaseling out serious legal trouble. Known as the Ferret Protection Act, the measure would prohibit breeding, distributing, smuggling or aiding in the transportation of ferrets.

The bill, submitted by Delegate Susan McComas of Hartford County, is just one of the many odd acts that have been dropped onto the House floor during this session of the General Assembly in Annapolis.

Randolph police: Ferret was starved

Woman faces cruelty charge; skinny animal on mend in new home

RANDOLPH -- A Darlene Court resident faces an animal cruelty charge for starving her pet ferret and leaving it to live in its own filth, authorities say.

Linda Morris is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 14, having been charged over the summer with animal cruelty. The charge was filed after police visiting her home in June on an unrelated matter noticed a horrible smell emanating from a ferret's cage in her garage, Sgt. Will Yarzab said Tuesday.
