Derry –A local man faces an animal-cruelty charge after police say he kept a ferret in his custody hoping for reward money and wound up tossing it out an apartment building window, according to court documents.

Two witnesses told police they saw Wilton "Rusty" French, 44, who is described as homeless and living in Derry, throw the white ferret out of a third-story bedroom window at 15 W. Broadway, according to court papers.

Police found the ferret lying dead on West Broadway on the night of June 30 after responding to a report of a domestic disturbance, police said. The ferret had apparently been run over, but police believe it died from the fall.

California Ferret Organization Calls for Re-Evaluation of Ban on Domestic Ferrets in Calif.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - June 5 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- In an open letter to Secretary of Agriculture A.G. Kawamura, dated June 2nd, 2007, the non-profit organization, LegalizeFerrets.org, part of the San Diego chapter of Ferrets Anonymous, requested a formal re-evaluation of the statewide ban on domestic ferrets (Musteo putorius furo).

"The ban on ferrets as pets in California is has been justified on a single, 18-year-old study, for which no background information is available," says Pat Wright, founder of Ferrets Anonymous and LegalizeFerrets.org. "The study is outdated and flawed. Since no one at the agriculture department or the Department of Fish and Game can give us any scientific reasons why domestic ferrets threaten agriculture or the environment, we feel the ban should be overturned."

Another bone-headed bill

Posted by the Asbury Park Press

Assemblyman Neil Cohen, D-Union, wants people to be able to sue for loss of companionship and for reimbursement of expenses if their pet dies because of contaminated pet food. He was sitting too close to the catnip when he came up with that idea. The last thing New Jersey needs is another open invitation for frivolous lawsuits.

Sure, we love our pets. And yes, we are saddened when we lose them, no matter the cause. But to give owners the right to sue for their own emotional pain and suffering — as proposed in Cohen's bill released from the Assembly Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee Monday — opens a can of worms that's better left closed.

Pet food companies now only have to reimburse medical expenses related to the poisoning. Cohen's bill would allow pet owners to seek a wide range of compensation, including replacement value, burial or cremation costs. It would also let them sue for loss of companionship — up to $15,000. That prospect must have a lot of lawyers — Cohen among them — sitting up and wagging their tails. But it's a terrible idea. Juries would be asked to decide how much a person loved his or her dog, cat, bird, ferret or goldfish? Please.

Poll: People Support Gay Marriage More Than Rodents As Pets

SAN DIEGO -- Ferret fans were disheartened by a statewide poll that showed more people support gay marriage than legalizing the rodents as pets, 10News reported.

San Diego-based Ferrets Anonymous commissioned the Field Poll to gauge public opinion on critters, but found that only 38 percent of those queried support legalizing ferrets, while 43 percent support gay marriage, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

"I thought California was more of a live-and-let-live state," said Pat Wright, who founded the group in San Diego in 1993. He told the San Jose Mercury News that legalizing gay marriage or marijuana might have a better chance at the polls than ferrets.

Lack of ferret support found in California

Published: March 31, 2007 at 1:11 PM
UPI International

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 31 (UPI) -- A Field Research poll funded by Ferrets Anonymous has found that most California respondents favor keeping ownership of the pointy-nosed animals illegal.

The San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported that the survey of 754 California residents was taken between March 21 and 28, and that less people support the legalization of ferrets than making same-sex marriage legal.

"Only 38 percent favor legalization. That's kind of absurd," Ferrets Anonymous founder Pat Wright said. "I thought California was more of a live-and-let-live state. If we had proposed legalized gay marriage or marijuana, we would've gotten a higher number."

The disappointing news from the group's survey comes in the wake of a failed attempt last year to legalize ownership of the polecat descendants in a California legislative committee.

The newspaper said that ferret-legalization lobbyist Jeanne Carley has criticized Wright's efforts such as the survey, alleging he is simply hurting their cause.
