On September 27, 2008, the city of El Cajon in
Southern California will roar with the combined engines of many motorcycles
in a ride that supports legalizing ferret ownership in the state. The
1st Annual Ferret Legalization Ride, organized by OC Ferrets and San
Diego Ferrets Anonymous, begins at approximately 11:30 a.m. at El Cajon
Harley Davidson and ends at Kennedy Park in El Cajon. The ride follows
a route that is approximately 85 miles long.
After the ride, at approximately 1 p.m., riders
and non-riders will gather at Kennedy Park to enjoy a barbecue, raffle,
music, games and the opportunity to meet others who support ferret
legalization in California.

Ohio Considers Mandatory Rabies Vaccination For Ferrets |
Ohio is considering a bill that would mandate
rabies vaccinations for all pet ferrets.
July 1, 2008
SmallAnimalChannel.com
Under House
Bill 446, ferret owners, keepers or harborers in Ohio must make
sure their pet is properly vaccinated at all times or face a penalty
of $50.
Ferrets that are exempt from vaccination requirements
include
- instances in which the ferret’s well-being would be endangered
by a vaccination against rabies as determined by a veterinarian;
- a ferret that is confined to the premises of an organization or
a nonprofit corporation that is devoted to the care of, or providing
hospital treatment for lost or homeless animals;
- a ferret that is confined for research purposes at a facility registered
under the U.S. Animal Welfare Act;
- a ferret that is confined to an animal shelter.

Will California's Ferrets Ever Get to Come in from the Cold? |

They're cute, affectionate, furry and playful. There are tens of thousands
of them in California, and they're allowed as pets in most countries
and every state except Hawaii.
So why are ferrets illegal in California?
It's an old story, characterized by battling sets of statistics and
interpretations of natural history. To the California Department of
Fish and Game and some environmentalists, ferrets are wild animals
with the potential to establish feral colonies and wreak havoc on native
species if they escape from captivity.
But as Jeanne Carley of Californians for Ferret Legalization has
pointed out, the ferret has been classified "as domesticated
by the United States Department of Agriculture, Smithsonian Institute,
Museum of Natural History, the Humane Society of the United States
and 150 zoos, zoological societies and other authorities."
Which isn't to say I think all the objections to overturning the ban
are irrational; they're not. Environmental protection is a huge issue
in California, and the battle over ferret legalization is no exception.
It's just that I think the fears are unlikely to become reality. And
here's why.

HAVERHILL — He didn't hit the dog or kick the cat.
But a city man threw his wife's pet ferret against the
wall during an argument with her, police said. The little animal is OK,
but the man faces 2 1/2 years
in jail if convicted of animal cruelty — the same jail term he
can receive on a charge of assaulting his wife during the argument, police
said.
Sgt. John Arahovites said officers were sent to the home
of Jeffrey Bodah, 55, of 40 Newcomb St., after dispatchers received a
phone call from a woman who sounded like she was being beaten. Recommend this article... |

Ferret owners are calling for changes |
PET ferrets which escape or are stolen may never be re-united with their
owners thanks to a "bureaucratic and uncaring" Campbelltown Council.
Hundreds of pet ferrets across the city will no longer have their owners'
details uploaded to a companion animal central log which is used to trace
owners when pets are dumped, stolen or missing.
The council is refusing to enter ferret owners' details because it is
not legally obliged to under the Companion Animals Act which covers cats
and dogs.
