Will California's Ferrets Ever Get to Come in from the Cold?

They're cute, affectionate, furry and playful. There are tens of thousands of them in California, and they're allowed as pets in most countries and every state except Hawaii.

So why are ferrets illegal in California?

It's an old story, characterized by battling sets of statistics and interpretations of natural history. To the California Department of Fish and Game and some environmentalists, ferrets are wild animals with the potential to establish feral colonies and wreak havoc on native species if they escape from captivity.

But as Jeanne Carley of Californians for Ferret Legalization has pointed out, the ferret has been classified "as domesticated by the United States Department of Agriculture, Smithsonian Institute, Museum of Natural History, the Humane Society of the United States and 150 zoos, zoological societies and other authorities."

Which isn't to say I think all the objections to overturning the ban are irrational; they're not. Environmental protection is a huge issue in California, and the battle over ferret legalization is no exception.

It's just that I think the fears are unlikely to become reality. And here's why.

HAVERHILL — He didn't hit the dog or kick the cat.

But a city man threw his wife's pet ferret against the wall during an argument with her, police said. The little animal is OK, but the man faces 2 1/2 years in jail if convicted of animal cruelty — the same jail term he can receive on a charge of assaulting his wife during the argument, police said.

Sgt. John Arahovites said officers were sent to the home of Jeffrey Bodah, 55, of 40 Newcomb St., after dispatchers received a phone call from a woman who sounded like she was being beaten.

. Ferret owners are calling for changes

PET ferrets which escape or are stolen may never be re-united with their owners thanks to a "bureaucratic and uncaring" Campbelltown Council.

Hundreds of pet ferrets across the city will no longer have their owners' details uploaded to a companion animal central log which is used to trace owners when pets are dumped, stolen or missing.

The council is refusing to enter ferret owners' details because it is not legally obliged to under the Companion Animals Act which covers cats and dogs.

A domesticated ferret, banned -- unfairly, some people contend -- in parts of the nation

About the critters

  • Ferrets, domesticated for more than 2,000 years, are used to hunt rabbits, rid ships of vermin and carry guide wires for cabling through pipes.
  • Male ferrets are called hobs; females, jills; and babies, kits.
  • Of the 6 million U.S. owners of small animals, 8 percent have ferrets.
  • The cost of a ferret averaged $88 in 2006.
  • Ferret owners spend an average of $105 a year on supplies, such as litter and sleeping hammocks; $79 on nonsurgical veterinary expenses; $73 on food; $73 on toys; and $14 on grooming. (Ferrets risk intestinal blockages from ingesting small objects as well as diseases of the adrenal gland and pancreas -- which carry costly treatments.)
  • Hyperactive when awake, a ferret sleeps about 18 hours a day.
  • Average weight at maturity: 1 to 5 pounds.
  • Typical life span: six to 10 years.

NEW YORK -- So cute. So cuddly. So illegal.

In an animal-loving nation that spends more than $41 billion a year on its 382 million assorted Marmadukes, Sylvesters, Tweetys, Nemos, Mickeys and Flickas, one popular pet is considered an outlaw in some parts of the country.

NEW YORK --

So cute. So cuddly. So illegal.

In an animal-loving nation that spends more than $41 billion a year on its 382 million assorted Marmadukes, Sylvesters, Tweetys, Nemos, Mickeys and Flickas, one popular pet lurks as an outlaw in parts of the country.

Ferrets, those slinky, mink-y cousins of weasels, badgers, skunks and polecats, amount to fauna non grata in New York City, Salt Lake City and numerous other municipalities, not to mention the states of California and Hawaii and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

Who knew? The country's ferret owners are painfully aware of such laws, consider them groundless and continue to fight them. According to estimates from the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, about 500,000 people own some 2 million ferrets. Ferret folks claim the real numbers are much higher. Given the multitude of ferret clubs, ferret-oriented Web sites and frolicsome ferret videos on YouTube, they well may be right.
