They’re not your typical criminals. But they’ll unite next month to try to convince the state to decriminalize a very important part of their lives.
They’re ferret owners, and they’re breaking the law.
Estimates suggest the number of ferrets in the state range anywhere from 100,000 to half a million, yet ferrets are illegal in California. The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council reports that Californians buy 27 percent of ferret supplies sold nationwide. That’s a lot of supplies for pets that aren’t supposed to be here.
The ferret-legalization movement has a history. A bill in 2005 was vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for being “too bureaucratic” and failing to have an environmental impact report (see “Ferret factor” by Jeffrey M. Barker; SN&R News; March 24, 2005). But ferret owners swore they’d be back. And this time, they’ll be armed to the rarely used but pointy teeth with facts and figures.
The San Diego-based group Ferrets Anonymous has contracted with a Sacramento State biological sciences professor to study the supposed dangers of ferrets. His first quarter report indicates that no area in the United States has had problems with feral ferrets, which has been the California Department of Fish and Game’s major reason for opposing legalization. Tim Hull says he's suffered from quiet
seizures for years, until now. And he thinks it is all due to
Bella the ferret.
The ferret, he says, isn't his pet. It's his service
animal.
"'It's a ferret, it's an animal. It's a pet, it's a
rat.' That's basically the first thing I feel that people think when
they come across her. They look at her, and she's in a buggy, they
think 'Well, that's just a pet and they are spending money on that pet'," said
Tim Hull when he described the usual reaction to his service animal.
Hull insists the calm that Bella brings him prevents
his seizures. He and his wife also says Bella can detect when
a seizure is coming.
"She senses his seizures, his sugars, and calms him
down to where he doesn't have it," says Leann Hull, Tim's wife.
Leann Hull says when a seizure episode does happen,
Bella alerts her, "She'll start making a sound like, 'cuh, cuh.'" Leann
says Tim's seizures are Recommend this article... |

CA Wire: In effort to legalize domestic ferrets in California, PETCO shoppers encouraged to save receipts |
LA MESA, Calif. — In an effort to legalize domestic ferrets
in California, one of only two states to ban the critters, ferret owners
are asking for help from PETCO(R), the state’s largest pet supply
retailer. “Now we’re asking PETCO to support ferret owners,” said
Pat Wright, of LegalizeFerrets.org.
Ferret legalization proponents are working with Dr. Geo Graening,
a professional EIR Consultant with Natural Investigations and California
State University Sacramento to comply with the Department of Fish and
Game’s requirement of an Environmental Impact Report before they
will address the issue of ferret legalization in California.
California has the largest ferret population in the nation. According
to the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (the largest pet trade association Recommend this article... |

The
members of a secret(ish) society called Ferrets
Anonymous had a special guest at a recent meeting, which was
held at an IHOP restaurant in Laguna Niguel: writer Gendy Alimurung
of the L.A. Weekly. Alimurung
describes the clandestine event:
"You have to be careful who you invite over to your house, because
what if your neighbor gets mad at you and turns you in?" says a
woman named Anita H., who is known as the Duck Lady because she
drives to work with her duck in a laundry hamper in the front seat.
This is something she could never do with her ferrets, at least
not in California or Hawaii, the only two states where the animals
are banned.
"Exactly," seconds Lance M., the organization's president. "What's
so special about California anyway? Do you see any devastation
in California? No. Just the bedroom in the morning." It is President
M.'s first term and already he is revolutionizing the way Ferrets
Anonymous does business, what with the redesigned logo and the

The members of Ferrets Anonymous are breakfasting
at an IHOP in Laguna Niguel, grumbling about the illegality of their
favorite animal and raison d’être. “Chinchillas
are legal, why not ferrets?” asks one man, over a bite of pancake.
