I am a newer ferret mother and spring is here, I was woundering when and how often I should take my ferret outside? She has all her shots and is almost a year old. I have a yard but no fence so other animals could leave germs. I just want to start to socialize her more with the world.

Hi Serina, thanks for posting.

I wouldn't think germs would be an issue, unless there is a dog that also uses the yard for potty breaks. The main thing is temperature extremes. Ferrets definitely cannot tolerate heat for any extended period.

Get your buddy a ferret leash and maybe a ferret playpen. Your ferret will enjoy the new environment. How often is up to you. As with any new parent, you can be to overprotective. But KEEP AN EYE on your ferret. Last thing you want is it getting lost.

Go to this yahoo group and search "outdoor playing" . there was a big discussion about different hazards that can be outdoors for ferrets. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/ferrethealth/
