Who are "WE"? WFFR consists of Lori Cole , partner Michelle DeVos and Lori's daughter, Cassi. We love animals, especially dogs and ferrets. This is the story of how we came to be a ferret rescue/shelter.
We are a home based Ferret Rescue. We came to be while living in New Mexico. We adopted two female ferrets, Harrah and Christie, from a ferret rescue near Tucson, AZ, and fast became ferret parents.
After two months, we "rescued" a little male, Sprite, from a pet store that was closing soon.. We took him to the vet for a very serious bladder infection, and ended up coming home with two ferrets instead of one. The vet had a ferret that was in need of a home.
Soon after, the shelter we adopted Harrah and Christie from, called and wanted to know if we would foster three ferrets. One of them, Ree Ree, as we called her, was deaf and she was a biter. Not just a little biter! She tried to take chunks out of you. We eventually got her to where she didn't bite and was able to be adopted out.
Our vet called two months later and asked if we could take two more babies. Of course, we said yes. They were two little girls named Cinnamon and Lady Bugz.
The next month, we were contacted by a lady living some 350 miles away. We were the closest ferret rescue and she needed to surrender her ferret of three years. We took in a very sick boy named Scooter. We almost lost him a couple times. We nursed him back to health and he became a permanent resident of the shelter.
When we were faced with the move to Michigan in 2005, we had to decide who to keep and who to adopt out. Some were adopted to families before we moved. We then made the move to Northwest Lower Michigan with our 3 dogs and 5 remaining ferrets. We weren't going to open a shelter in Michigan, but fate had other ideas. We found a ferret, we named KoKo, wandering through our front yard on a rainy August day. We never found his owner. He was a very sick little boy. We only had him for a few short months, but we gave him lots of love and he, in return, touched our hearts. It is in his memory that we opened Warm Fuzzies Ferret Rescue and Shelter.
